Well Siloam
In a small village near Kaballa is an orphanage and a school. Here Ewellcon has realised a beautiful well
Meeting Zachariah Conteh
Close to the town of Kabala we came into contact with a Christian orphanage and a Christian school. During our visit we met Zachariah Conteh, the driving force behind this special work. We were soon struck by how orderly and carefully everything was organised. Despite the limited resources, there was calm, structure and dedication. In the conversations that followed, a warm bond arose and mutual trust grew.
A problem with clean water
At the same time we saw a major problem that we also encounter in many other places in Sierra Leone: there was no proper water supply. Just as in many other villages and projects, children and staff had to travel long distances to fetch water. Precious time was lost and the availability of clean water was not something to take for granted.
A water source for orphanage and school
That is why Njalowei, in consultation with Ewellcon, decided to realise a water source at the orphanage and the school. This well not only provides the children of the orphanage and the pupils of the school with clean drinking water, but is also of great significance for the surrounding community.
The name Siloam
The well has been given the name Siloam. This name refers to the Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem, mentioned in the Bible in John 9. There the Lord Jesus sent a man born blind to the Pool of Siloam to wash himself. After he had done so, he received his sight. John adds that Siloam means: "sent".
The name Siloam reminds us that the Lord Jesus was sent by His Father as the Saviour of sinners. Just as the water from this well brings life and refreshment for the body and for health, so the name Siloam points to Christ, Who gives spiritual life to all whom He seeks out.
Source of true life
We are grateful that this well could be realised. For the children of the orphanage, the pupils of the school and the residents of the surrounding area, Siloam means a daily provision. At the same time, may the name on the well be a lasting reminder of the Source of true life.
