Well Eden

Daily clean water without long journeys. Every time residents visit the well, they see a Bible verse on the sign by the pump.

Well Eden

Water in Rochen Village

In warm regions, clean drinking water is vital. For the residents of Rochen Village, near Malal in Sierra Leone, fetching water was for a long time a daily challenge. That is why a well has been realised in the centre of the village, bearing the name Eden.

A world of difference

The new well stands at the centre of the village and provides the residents with clean and safe water. Previously, many had to travel a considerable distance to fetch water, often with heavy jerrycans or buckets. This was especially a heavy and time-consuming task for women and children.

With the arrival of this well, daily life has improved considerably. Water is now available close by, giving families more time for school, work and other activities. Moreover, clean water contributes to better health and hygiene within the community.

Why the name Eden?

The well bears the name Eden, a reference to the Garden of Eden as described in the book of Genesis. Eden was the place where God gave abundance and where a river arose to water the land. The name recalls God's care, provision and goodness towards mankind.

For the residents of Rochen, this well may reflect something of that abundant care. Where effort once had to be made to obtain water, a source is now available right in the middle of the village.

Connected to the church

Not far from this well stands the simple church of Rochen. There, God's Word may be proclaimed every Sunday. In this way, care for daily life and care for the soul lie close together.

The water from the well quenches the thirst of the body, but at the same time points to the Living Water of which the Lord Jesus speaks in the Gospel. Just as the residents come to the pump to fetch water, so from the church sounds the invitation to come to Him Who alone can quench the deepest thirst of the heart.

In this way, the well Eden is not only a practical facility for the village, but also a lasting reminder of God's providential care and of the riches found in His Word.
