Well En-Gedi by the church in Rochen

In warm regions, surface water is literally sickening. In Rochen Village near Malal we therefore drilled a deep well in April 2024.

The well bears the name En-Gedi, after the spring in the desert of Judah. The sign by the pump displays the Bible verse from which the name comes, so that everyone who comes to fetch water is also reminded of the Source of Living Water.

A world of difference

Next to the simple church in the village of Rochen, a well has been drilled. A seemingly small change, but for the residents of the village it means a world of difference.

Previously they had to travel a considerable distance to fetch water. The centre of the village lies somewhat higher, and it was precisely this difference in elevation that made the daily walk with heavy jerrycans extra hard. Every step upward cost strength. Fetching water was not a simple task, but an effort that recurred every day.

Now, right next to the church, stands a water pump.

Close by. Accessible. A place where people gather, where water is freely available to everyone who comes to fetch it.

A quiet reference to the Living Water

This water pump may also point further. Water quenches the thirst of the body. It also points to the Living Water. As the Lord Jesus speaks in the Gospel according to John about the living water that He gives, water that is obtained freely and that never causes thirst again.

Whoever stands at the pump need only take a few more steps to walk into the church. There, the Word may sound every Sunday. There, that Living Water is pointed to.

In this way the well stands not only as a symbol of care and practical help, but also as a quiet reference to hope.
